What should I expect from therapy?

Therapy requires you to be open to actively exploring aspects of yourself in order to gain a higher level of self-awareness. Benefits may ultimately include personal growth and positive behavior changes, however, some aspects of therapy may be unpleasant. Therapy requires you to explore all aspects of yourself and find solutions that will increase your overall well-being. In order to do that, both positive and negative experiences and behaviors may be examined. Dr. Hernandez’s approach to therapy is generally brief and goal focused. Progress is evaluated about every three months and goals are adjusted accordingly based on joint feedback from you and Dr. Hernandez. Dr. Hernandez utilizes a multisystem, multidisciplinary approach and will actively collaborate with your family members or other practitioners (i.e., medical teams, school staff, alternative healthcare providers, etc.) to treat you in a holistic manner if this is part of the treatment plan determined by you and Dr. Hernandez. Therapy is a collaboration and active participation by you is necessary.

How does consultation differ from therapy?

In consultation, the psychologist plays more of an expert role and disseminates information in order for the client to make decisions related to issues in their life. The psychologist provides education, resources and referrals to help clients determine which option or direction they feel most comfortable pursuing. For example, “These options are available to you…let’s discuss the details of each option further in order for you to choose which would suit you and/or your family best”. Therapy offers a supportive environment to process how one’s thoughts, beliefs and behaviors affect their general functioning. The goal is to gain a better understanding of one’s self and increased awareness of how one interacts in the world around them. In examining maladaptive thoughts and behaviors, one can find more adaptive patterns to find more positive solutions to personal well-being and interpersonal relationships. Clients collaborate with their psychologist to process and discover solutions that fit within their personal lifestyle and world-view. Do you accept insurance?

While I am not “in network” with any insurance companies, I will submit claims to insurance companies on behalf of my clients. Clients are responsible for paying the fees up front, but some insurance companies will reimburse clients depending on the plan. If you would like for me to submit claims to your insurance company, you must complete the Health Insurance Claims Form. Please download this form and bring a completed form along with your health insurance card to your first visit. For those who would like assistance to find out about benefits prior to the first visit, I am happy to contact your insurance company on your behalf if you send me the form and a copy of your card in advance.
